What is the difference between a judge's ruling and society's expectations in Taiwan? As of now, although Taiwan has not abolished the death penalty, some say that in essence, we are not far from doing so. Why is that? Firstly, Taiwanese judges rarely hand down death sentences these days, often citing the possibility of rehabilitation. Secondly, even if a death sentence is pronounced, there is uncertainty about when it will be executed, leaving the victims' families in endless grief and pain.
There is a folk belief in Taiwan that if the injustice of a victim cannot be redressed in the mortal world, one can seek a "Black Order Flag" from the King of the Underworld or the Great Emperor of the East. With the Black Order Flag, the spirit can return to the mortal world, accompanied by the Seven Lord or other ghostly companions, to seek revenge. It is believed that once the Black Order Flag is obtained, it serves as a permit for revenge, and even deities cannot interfere.
The legend of the Black Order Flag has appeared in several unsolved cases we have previously reported. Some of these cases remain unsolved due to insufficient evidence or an inability to convict the culprits. In such cases, the aggrieved souls resort to the Black Order Flag to take revenge on their own. Today, we will share with you a case that occurred in October 2021 at the Taipei Prison.
A prisoner named Lin Chunxiong suddenly felt weak and broke out in cold sweat. Within ten minutes, he was rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment, but unfortunately, he passed away. The cause of death was cardiac arrest, but during his imprisonment, he had no reported health issues. Rumors circulated that Lin Chunxiong, the prisoner, had committed a heinous crime of brutally killing a young girl, but he was only sentenced to life imprisonment. Unable to find justice in the mortal world, it was said that the girl's spirit sought revenge using the Black Order Flag.
In the case from 2015 that shocked society, 31-year-old Lin Chunxiong had no reason to harm a 14-year-old high school girl. The girl, Qiu Xiaomei, had four siblings, all with physical and mental disabilities. Their family lived in a house without water or electricity, and Xiaomei spent her days at an internet café to save on expenses. It was there that she became acquainted with Lin Chunxiong's group. However, a simple curse uttered in anger resulted in her tragic fate.
In a fit of rage over a disrespectful word spoken by Xiaomei, Lin Chunxiong and his gang physically assaulted her. Passersby intervened and halted the beating, but the gang then took Xiaomei to a remote location under a bridge, where the assault continued for over an hour. Abandoned and severely injured, Xiaomei died under the bridge, while Lin Chunxiong and his accomplices nonchalantly went to sing at a karaoke lounge.
Lin Chunxiong's heinous actions of torturing, sexually assaulting, and killing a teenage girl, followed by the burning of her body, resulted in a trial and sentencing process that underwent several revisions. Initially, he was sentenced to life imprisonment, but later, the verdict was changed to death penalty. However, in the end, the Supreme Court rejected the appeal, and he was sentenced to life imprisonment again.
Faced with such a ruling, Xiaomei's father felt grief and frustration but was unable to appeal for harsher punishment. He dreamed of his daughter returning to him, crying and asking why those responsible weren't sentenced to death. A few years later, Lin Chunxiong suddenly collapsed at the Taipei Prison. Despite prompt medical attention, he couldn't be saved. As no autopsy was conducted due to the family's refusal, the exact cause of his mysterious death remains unknown.
The legend of the Black Order Flag might have contributed to Lin Chunxiong's sudden death, but regardless, one may wonder why the mortal world cannot mete out justice on its own.
