However, there is a case of arson committed by a man named Weng Renxian, who burned six of his family members (relatives and friends). He not only showed no remorse whatsoever but also dared to challenge the judge in court on multiple occasions. He was sentenced to death in the first and second trials without any surprises. However, when the case reached the Supreme Court, the judges overturned the death sentence and sent it back for retrial. The reason for this was to investigate whether the burn and scald injuries suffered by other surviving family members who escaped from the fire were directly caused by Weng Renxian's arson. The family members found this reason absurd as the evidence of arson was already so clear, and they couldn't understand why the judges were nitpicking on such trivial details. Weng Renxian's third brother, on the eve of the retrial verdict, gave us an interview where he painfully recalled the unforgettable and heart-wrenching New Year's Eve. He simply hoped that the presiding judges could stand in the shoes of the victims' families and try to empathize with their suffering. They not only have to endure the pain of losing loved ones but also live in constant fear every day because Weng Renxian once threatened that he could come back to haunt them dozens of times through reincarnation. Three years ago, he chose New Year's Eve to strike because he believed that on that night, everyone would be home with their families, and he would have the opportunity to kill all family members at once.
