Over the past three years of the Tsai government's tenure, there has been one execution of a death row inmate by firing squad. As of now, there are 41 death row inmates with final convictions awaiting execution by firing squad, 22 of whom are incarcerated at Taipei Detention Center, housed in Chung II Hall and Hsiao II Hall. These death row inmates are different from other detainees; they do not work in factories or go on public business, and they only have half an hour of outdoor time each day to exercise on the sports field. The rest of the time, they are confined to a 1,368-square-foot space. Some people believe that death row holds the most heinous and difficult-to-control inmates. However, the reality is quite the opposite. Xu Ziqiang, who spent 16 years in death row before being exonerated, revealed in an interview with us that the death row cells are the quietest and most peaceful places in the entire prison. He reasoned that once someone reaches this stage, what is there left to fight for? The day-to-day wait for death is the most agonizing and torturous experience. Xu Ziqiang shared that in the past, executions usually took place around 5 a.m., so each night before sleeping, he would put on new clothes, socks, and pants. He would lie in bed and wait until the next morning. If he wasn't scheduled for execution, he would change back into his old clothes. This is how the days of death row inmates go, one day at a time.

As a place where life and death are divided, the execution ground naturally carries many folk legends and customs. At the entrance of the execution ground, there is an image of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, hoping to guide the death row inmates and give them a chance to start anew in their next life. However, how many can truly face death without struggle once they step into the execution ground?

In the early days of executions, there were no silencers or anesthesia. However, later, out of humane consideration, the decisions of death row inmates were respected, and anesthesia was administered to avoid struggles that might cause bullets to veer off target. Nonetheless, there have been incidents where the shots hit the heart, but death did not occur immediately, and additional shots were needed. There was even a death row inmate who agreed to donate his organs, but to everyone's surprise, he revived after being sent to the hospital. What should be done in such situations?

The executioners for death row inmates in Taiwan are law enforcement officers from the second trial. It is said that the cost of one execution is 3,000 NT dollars. Many law enforcement officers from the second trial are unwilling to act as executioners for the meager sum because the job carries tremendous pressure. It is rumored that some law enforcement officers accidentally violated taboos during the execution process, leading to a series of inexplicable and eerie occurrences.

The Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva enshrined at Taipei Detention Center is believed to be very efficacious. Many staff members at the center pay their respects and pray for their families' safety. However, it is said that during the Ghost Month of one particular year, due to an error committed by the newly appointed warden, Taipei Detention Center experienced numerous bizarre incidents throughout that year.
