Heechul never removed Han Geng's (Hankyung) mask, somehow a fanfic story became fact to people. Always check for answers, the truth is always somewhere.
Heechul and Han Geng were good friends, no doubt, but Heechul is not an idiot, he would not of risked getting his company sued or breaching his own contract.
Also it was not just SM, contracts had to be formed with the tv broadcast channels as well. Han Geng was the first non Korean in Kpop, so it was new to them. Hopefully the hardships he endured made it better for the next non Korean performers.
