Welcome.
Bonhams, London, Auction Preview The "Moving On Sale" Part 1 Chinese Art, NO Reserves
About Roger Keverne
Generosity of spirit, warmth, a great sense of humour,
superb storytelling, love of culture and tremendous thirst for
knowledge - both to learn and to impart - are some of the first
things that come to mind when thinking of Roger Keverne.
An avid tennis player, formidable at 75, it is rather extraordinary
to consider that Roger has accumulated six decades of
experience in Chinese art, most of them at the very top of the
‘game’. Keverne, the younger child of a Yorkshire coal-mining
engineer began his nearly 60-year career of dealing in Chinese
art with the venerable Spink & Son Ltd, Crown medallists and
antique dealers in London, where he quickly rose to head the
Asian departments by the age of only 28. In 1992 Keverne
decided to leave Spink to start his own business together with
Miranda Clarke, his wife and business partner, who, following
spells at S.G. Warburg and Reuters joined Spink in 1984.
At the basis of the superb exhibitions held both in their London
gallery and abroad were numerous hours spent in meticulous
research in their extensive library, visits to collections and
museums around the world and, importantly, hands-on
experience of inspecting and making a judgement on many
thousands of objects. These efforts culminated in the 40
catalogues published over the years, which demonstrate the
remarkable breadth and depth of Roger Keverne Ltd, dealing
in objects from the Neolithic Period to the late Qing Dynasty,
in many categories from archaic bronzes, jades, ceramics,
cloisonné and painted enamel, lacquer, wood, bamboo, ivory,
sculpture, to soapstone and hardstone carvings.
Keverne counted Royal patrons amongst his clients, including
Gustav VI Adolf, King of Sweden, as well as counselling
Sir Geoffrey de Bellaigue, Director of the Royal Collection
and Surveyor of The Queen’s Works of Art. Other illustrious
collectors among his clients were John D. Rockefeller III and
subsequently David Rockefeller, Florence and Herbert Irving
(who generously donated much of their collection to the
Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York), Gerald Arnhold (part
of this collection is now exhibited in the Oriental Museum,
Durham University), Mrs Alfred Clark, T.T. Tsui, Muneichi Nitta,
Edward T. Chow, T.Y. Chao, Soame Jenyns, Sir John Woolf
and Sir Michael Butler. As a governor of Compton Verney
House Trust (one of the top three collections of early Chinese
bronzes in Europe), he advised Sir Peter Moores in the
formation of the important Chinese archaic bronze collection,
including the purchase of the famous Albright-Knox fangjia for
US$8.104 million.

Setting the highest professional standards was always
an aim Roger Keverne strived for. He is the editor of the
authoritative book Jade published in 1991 and has delivered
many lectures on Chinese art. He worked tirelessly to
maintain the highest standards in trade in Chinese art,
serving twice as Chairman of ‘Asian Art in London’, as well
as on the vetting committees of a number of important
international art fairs in London, New York, Brussels, Paris
and Hong Kong, and most recently as President of BADA
(the British Antique Dealers’ Association).
Making a living from the subject one is passionate about is a
privilege, yet at the same time it is a heavier burden, having
to make the right judgement, in authenticating, assessing
the condition of each object, as well as its rarity and cultural
and historical context, all concluding in a financial decision to
buy or not and at what price to sell.
