I had a thought to make this a happy ending, but then I felt that a little bit of sadness goes a long way to make something that much more beautiful! Like an old Chinese saying that goes, "If not for the piercing, bitter cold of winter, the plum blossoms would not have given off its most wonderful scent." The context is a little different, but I feel it works both ways, haha. (￣▽￣)
