这是一部较早运用电影艺术表现第一次国内战争时期共产党内不同思想和路线斗争的影片。它以1927年湖南农民革命运动为背景，描写了在血与火斗争中站立起来并汇人革命洪流的农民武装的成长过程。实际上是为毛泽东在这个历史时期的作用树碑立传。插曲《送别》优美动听，脍炙人口。
