The seventh generation codenamed G30 was unveiled on 13 October 2016. Improvements over the previous model include weight savings of up to 100kg and a new design with a drag coefficient of 0.22 Cd. Other improvements include an updated BMW iDrive system that now uses a high-resolution 10.25-inch display, a new head-up display that covers 70% more area as well as selective anti-dazzle high beam headlights with a range of up to 500 metres.[22]
The BMW 5 Series is a mid-size luxury car manufactured by German automaker BMW since 1972. It is the successor to the 4-door sedan models of the BMW New Class and is currently in its seventh generation.Initially, the 5 Series was only available in a sedan body style. The touring body style was added in 1991 and the 5-door hatchback ("Gran Touring") was added in 2009.It is BMW's second best-selling model after the 3-Series and in 2010 produced about 50% of the BMW's profits.[1]On January 29, 2008, the 5 millionth 5 Series was manufactured, a 530d Saloon in Carbon Black Metallic.[2]The 5 Series got its name by being the fifth of the "new series" cars after the V-8 and Isetta era[citation needed] and was the replacement for the older four-door New Class sedans. The current BMW naming convention began with the first 5 Series. The BMW 5 Series (codenamed G30) is an upcoming lineup of executive cars by German automaker BMW that will succeed the F10 codenamed 5 Series as the seventh model generation. It will be offered in a saloon, a Touring branded estate (codenamed G31) and a GT branded hatchback body style (codenamed G32). The new BMW 5 Series was unveiled on October 12, 2016.[1]The 5 Series is based on a modular automobile platform on which the full-size G11 BMW 7 Series luxury car is also built upon. A plug-in hybrid variant, the BMW 530e iPerformance, for the saloon and estate body styles and a range of autonomous advanced driver assistance systems that debuted in the 7 Series are also planned for release.[2] The OKL platform uses multiple materials to increase structural rigidity and decrease overall mass. Following the BMW i models, as well as the 7 Series, its technical base is made of carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP), magnesium, aluminium and high-strength steel. Improvements to the ride involve the addition of air springs on both the front and rear axle. The front grille is capable of closing and opening its shutters to allow for optimal engine cooling and better aerodynamic flow whenever possible. The 5 Series is equipped with BMW's sixth generation iDrive vehicle control system, which has been expanded to offer four manual input options, most notably gesture-recognizing controls. The electronic architecture has been upgraded to a 48V system in order to make room for a new number of autonomous advanced driver assistance systems.[1] The plug-in hybrid variant of the new lineup, the BMW 530e iPerformance, is scheduled to be released in Europe in March 2017.[3] BMW introduced the "iPerformance" model designation to all BMW plug-in hybrid vehicles from July 2016.[4] The 530e iPerformance features a 70 kW (95 hp) electric motor powered by 9.4 kWh battery. The expected all-electric range is 45 km (28 mi), under the New European Driving Cycle.[3] Alpina will also create its own performance versions of the 5 Series. Prototypes of saloon and estate variants have been spied at Alpina and BMW facilities and at the Nürburgring Nordschleife as early as July 2016.[5] The BMW 540i M Sport was used in The Escape episode released on October 23, 2016.[citation needed]
