It’s a black and white world in more ways than one in Kendrick Lamar’s new video for the song ALRIGHT from his #1 album- To Pimp a Butterfly.
Corrupt po po, life in the hood and images of racial tension make up Kendrick’s new video. AND… it’s shot in black and white. For obvious reasons. So I’m about to give you the highlights.
The nearly seven-minute-long video directed by Colin Tilley and The Little Homies starts by showing shots of life in a hood in northern California. Meanwhile, Kendrick voice is heard in a monologue about his struggles with abusing his power, his consequent resentment, his deep depression. And just as he almost gets handcuffed by a cop, he escapes. Insert the dramatic slow motion image of a cop pulling his trigger at Kendrick. Boom. Music drops.
Highlight number 1 is when He and his friends are rapping in a car that Kendrick is driving… except he’s NOT driving.
A bunch of police officers of the Caucasian persuasion are holding the car up like slaves have historically done for royalty. Then you hear the screeching of tires and behold highlight number 2, the boys are now in charge of their own car, but this time it’s running circles around a police car. But the best part (#3) is that Kendrick has escaped the chaos by flying. Highlight #4 is the hook of the song- we gone be alright- sung by this big, racially mixed crowd. And P.S. Do not miss the dancers showing off all their hip hop moves in our 5th highlight. And though with all his flying Kendrick seems to escape the war going on in the streets of his hometown, our 6th highlight is in the end of the video when he gets shot in the heart by a police officer who uses his fingers as a gun.
Ah! What a beautifully shot but bloody slow motion fall by Kendrick- from the sky down to the hard earth. The music ends as Kendrick continues his opening monologue. And our final highlight occurs after Kendrick hits the ground and right before the video ends- he cracks a smile. The end.
